About the Department
Brief History:
Commerce education in India began in 1886, for in that year a commercial school was set up in Madras. Commercial institutions were also started in Bombay and Calcutta between 1903 and 1912.City College and Goenka College of Commerce & Business Administration were the two pioneers that heralded the entry of Commerce education in the university system of Kolkata in the very early days of twentieth century. By that time City College had already made its imprint on the education map of undivided India for its excellence in other subjects. A century later, the Department of Commerce still retains its prestigious position as one of the foremost institutions dedicated to Commerce education in the eastern part of the country. Its Alumni occupy distinguished positions in almost all spheres of society; government, bureaucracy, banking, finance, academics, business, journalism and media. In the present context of globalised and liberalised economy, commerce education is an extremely relevant one and City College Commerce Department feels obligated to discharge its responsibility to the society through its honest, sincere and continuous search for excellence.
Rich Faculty: The Commerce Department of City College is staffed by experienced, dedicated and highly qualified teachers. Teachers are always at hand to advise and help the students. Some of the teachers in the department are associated with Post-Graduate departments of different Universities of West Bengal. The faculty members regularly participate in Seminars and Workshops in order to upgrade themselves with the recent developments in their respective disciplines.
Academic Performance: The Department has a rich heritage of impressive academic performance. The tireless efforts of the teachers had helped to produce from the students a galaxy of eminent personalities in the field of business, industries and management. The Century old City College that heralded the entry of Commerce education in the university system of Kolkata today is proud of its Department of Commerce. Today, it is counted among the ten best Commerce colleges in India (According to a recent India Today survey). Thanks to the combined effort of its staff and students. The Department is all poised to take Commerce education to the next level.
