About the Department


Brief History:
Department of Economics is one of the oldest in this College. Formerly it was known as Department of Political Economy. After 1960-61 it was named as Department of Economics. Since then this department has been fulfilling the educational demand of good number of students. Since inception, this Department has been catering just–in-time service particularly to weaker and marginalized section of the society.

This Department offers 4 UG courses:
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Degree Course.
  • B.A./B.Sc. (General) Degree Course.
  • B.Com. (Hons.) Degree Course.
  • B.Com. (General) Degree Course.
Both of these are 3 years programmed(including 6 semesters’ courses) Under CBCS Systems.

Courses Offered:
  • Bachelor of Science in Economics Honours (Under CBCS System of Calcutta University).
  • B.A./B.Sc. General Programme in Economics (Under CBCS System of Calcutta University).
Department offers (Honours and General) course with the collaboration of Mathematics and Political Science Departments as a pass course subject.

Infrastructure:
Department of Economics has a departmental Seminar Library with more than 150 Books, awell-maintainedLaptop with 30 e-books. The Department is rich with modern software like SPSS, Stata and E-views to carry on practical prescribed by syllabus as well as for additional projects.

Mission and Vision:
  • In respect of teaching, learning and evaluation:
    • To acquaint the students with various economic concepts and principles of Economics.
    • With those concepts we want to equip our students with the ability to analysis the emerging issues of Indian economy and world Economy.
    • To encourage the Students in solving various economic problems.
    • To empower the Students to take up challenges in administration and in real economic issues applying their accuredknowledge.
    • To promote multi-disciplinary knowledge among the students we can make them fit for various employment opportunities.
  • In respect of research and consultancy:
    • The City College Centre for Economic Studies has been formed to undertake research and consultancy work (jointly with the department of Commerce), which will not only provide intellectual challenges to our teachers (and learners), but also generate revenue to augment our infrastructure and learning resources. We aim to improve the functioning of the Centre and tie up with Universities, other academic bodies as well as with the industry to make it a more active unit.
